NIOSH Introduces Its New Center for Workers' Compensation Studies

NIOSH has established a new Center for Workers' Compensation Studies (CWCS) that will maximize the use of workers' compensation data for injury and illness surveillance. According to NIOSH, CWCS will promote collaboration of agency scientists with insurers and private- and public-sector organizations to reach set goals. These goals are to:
  • Identify trends in work-related injuries and illnesses.
  • Understand the use and limits of workers' compensation information.
  • Integrate workers' compensation data with other health-related data.
  • Understand the total economic impact of work-related injury and illness.
  • Identify ways to prevent and reduce the severity of work-related injury and illness.
  • Develop best practices for prevention and disability management.
