European Oil & Gas Industry Discloses Fracking Chemical Use

The European oil and gas industry is launching a website listing the chemicals used in fracking. The site is meant to help address public concerns about the fracking industry and potential health and environmental impacts of fracking.

Natural Gas From ShaleFluid and Additive Component Transparency Service is open to the public and offers information for exploratory wells in the European Economic Area by participating organizations. Data provided on the website includes:
  • Amount of water used, in cubic meters.
  • Maximum mass percentage of water compared to the total mass of hydraulic fracturing fluid used.
  • Lists of chemical substances in fracturing fluid, including both Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) substances and non-MSDS substances.
  • Chemical Abstract Service Number (CAS Number).
  • List of maximum mass percentage of each chemical additive in the hydraulic fracturing fluid.
