The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the Highway
Loss Data Institute are petitioning the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA) to require all new motorcycles to be equipped with
antilock braking systems.
The petition aims to lower motorcycle crash fatalities,
which according to NHTSA statistics increased by 2% from 2010 to 2011. An
analysis by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reveals that motorcycles
with antilock brakes are 31% less likely to be involved in fatal crashes, and a
study from the Highway Loss Data Institute found that there were 20% fewer
collision claims for motorcycles with antilock brakes.
