The U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) has unveiled a new app for iPhones and the iPod Touch
that provides safety information about vehicles, including alerts about recalls
and breaking news from NHTSA.
The app allows users to search through 5-Star Safety Ratings
for vehicles by make and model and find crash test ratings when considering
purchasing a new vehicle and is set up so that ratings of different models can
easily be compared. Car owners can also register their vehicles so that NHTSA
will notify them if a recall, complaint or push notice on their vehicle has
been reported.
Additionally, the app provides support for parents,
including detailed instructions for installing child seats and directions to
nearby child seat inspection stations.
