The American Nurses Association has released national
interdisciplinary standards for safe patient handling and mobility to help
healthcare professionals create a stronger safety culture in their work
environments.
According to U.S. Department of Labor statistics, in 2011,
the healthcare and social assistance sector suffered more musculoskeletal
disorders (MSDs) than the construction, mining and manufacturing sectors. To
help prevent future incidents, the American Nurses Association developed Safe Patient Handling and Mobility:
Interprofessional National Standards, a publication that guides the
development of safer practices, policies, regulations and legislation regarding
the safety and health of healthcare workers and patients alike. The publication
was compiled using observations and knowledge from nurses, occupational and
physical therapists, safety and ergonomics experts and risk management
specialists.
