Drivers Holding on to "Do As I Say, Not As I Do" Mindset

Most drivers have heard or seen reports on the deathly potential of distracted driving. Yet, as AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety’s 2011 Traffic Safety Culture Index shows, drivers continue to do it anyway. Specifically, the survey found that 95% of drivers view texting or sending e-mail by other drivers as a serious threat to their own personal safety, yet 35% of those same drivers admitted to having read or sent a text message or e-mail in the previous month. This persistent “do as I say, not as I do” mindset only perpetuates the threat of cell phone use while driving. “Changing our nation's traffic safety culture requires drivers to take responsibility for their actions and alter their own behaviors on the road,” says AAA Foundation’s Peter Kissinger.
