Domino’s Pizza & NFPA Deliver Fire Safety Tips

Domino’s Pizza is delivering more than pizza this month. The pizza chain has partnered with NFPA to remind customers what they can do to keep their homes safe from fire, and is delivering fire safety tips on its pizza boxes throughout March—an ideal time to change the batteries in home smoke detectors.

According to NFPA, about two-thirds of home fire deaths occur in homes without working smoke alarms, or those that lack them altogether. As part of the spring campaign, customers who order from participating stores may be surprised when their delivery arrives aboard a fire engine. If all the smoke alarms in the home are working, the pizza is free. If a smoke alarm is not working, firefighters will replace the batteries or smoke alarm and leave the home with a fully functioning fire safety device.

NFPA offers several spring cleaning home fire safety tips:
  • Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire in half. Install smoke alarms inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement. Test them at least monthly, and replace batteries at least once a year.
  • The leading cause of home clothes dryer fires is failure to clean them. Clean the lint filter before or after each load of laundry, and remove lint that has collected around the drum. Keep the area around the dryer clear of boxes, cleaning supplies and clothing.
  • Most cooking fires in the home involve the stove top. Keep anything that can catch fire—oven mitts, wood utensils, packaging, towels—away from the stove top. Stay in the kitchen when using the stove top.
  • Extension cord fires outnumber fires ignited by permanent or detachable power cords by two to one. Do not run extension cords across doorways or under carpets. Have a qualified electrician add receptacle outlets to avoid using extension cords.
