OSHA's Compliance Directive to Address Workplace Violence

OSHA has issued a directive on enforcement procedures for investigating incidents of workplace violence that establishes uniform procedures for OSHA field staff when responding to these cases. It also allows for inspections in industries considered vulnerable to workplace violence, such as healthcare and social service settings, as well as late-night retail establishments. NIOSH studies show that employers who train their staff on workplace violence, conduct hazard analyses and encourage employees to report assaults or threats can reduce violent incidents. Other measures such as using entrance door detectors and providing employee “safe rooms” for emergencies can help minimize risk as well.
