A study by researchers at the University of Buffalo shows
that collision fatality rates are more closely related to the type of vehicle
being driven than the safety rating of the vehicle. The study surveyed over 83,000
head-on traffic collisions over a period of 15 years and reveals that drivers
of passenger cars are seven times more likely to be killed than SUV drivers in
head-on collisions involving both vehicle types.
A major factor for fatalities of drivers in passenger cars
is the height and weight of their vehicles compared to those of SUVs. However,
when two vehicles of similar types and sizes collided, SUV drivers were still
less likely to be killed than drivers of smaller cars.
