Two new proposed rules, announced by U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), hope to increase inspections of food imported into the U.S. According to an ANSI news release, the proposed rules would require importers to keep records that prove they are complying with FDA safety rules and required inspection criteria. ANSI also reports that FDA would also need to rely on "oversight work carried out by accredited third-party certification bodies." These entities that follow FDA-approved procedures would determine the competence of the organizations performing food safety inspections and audits that are conducted on food imports.
