Looking for the latest in electrical safety guidance? Be sure to check out the 6th edition of
An Illustrated Guide to Electrical Safety. Just published by
ASSE, the book helps readers navigate through recent changes to 29 CFR 1910 Subpart S, Part 1, “Design Safety Standards for Electrical Systems” and Part 2, “Electrical Safety-Related Work Practices.” It also synchronizes OSHA’s requirements with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and NFPA’s 70E, as well as requirements for construction.
What changed in Subpart S?
- sections added from NEC for deteriorating agents, mechanical execution of work and mounting and cooling of equipment;
- working clearances and guarding updated for both low- and high-voltage installation;
- regulations for branch circuits, overcurrent protection (including cord-and-plug connected equipment requirements), GFCIs and grounding added;
- wiring methods, classified locations and special systems updated.
Although electrical-related incidents make up a small percentage of workplace injuries, many of the injuries are fatal. According to Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers, arc flash is the cause of many of these injuries.
