Senator Barbara Boxer, chair of the Environment and Public
Works Committee (EPW), announced earlier this week that the EPW will conduct
oversight into the circumstances surrounding the April 17 chemical disaster in
West, Texas. The explosion resulted in 15 fatalities as well as hundreds of
injuries and damage to homes, businesses and a nearby rail line.
In addition to investigating conditions that may have
contributed to the disaster, the EPW will examine the chemical safety laws that
apply to similar facilities. Boxer urged CSB and EPA to put additional effort
into enforcing chemical safety laws to prevent future disasters.
