A new safety and health topics web page from OSHA provides information for workers and employers who are exposed to toluene in the workplace. According to the web page, "Toluene is a clear, colorless liquid that becomes a vapor when exposed to air at room temperature. . . has a sharp or sweet odor, which is a sign of exposure." The agency says products that contain toluene, such as varnishes, paints, adhesives or printing ink, are in various industries.
The web page provides information on health hazards associated with toluene, protective measures to prevent exposure, occupational exposure limits, standards and risk assessment information. According to OSHA, current exposure limits have been determined to prevent health effects on the nervous system from long-term exposure, but workers often are exposed while performing activities that are lower than the current exposure limits.
