Organizations Offer Tips for Mobile Device Battery Safety

U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and CTIA-The Wireless Association are partnering to remind consumers to be safe while using wireless mobile devices, batteries and charges. CPSC says that lithium-ion batteries, which are used in most mobile phones and smartphones, hold a lot of energy but are more sensitive to physical stress than alkaline batteries. CPSC and CTIA recommend the following tips for consumers to stay safe while using such devices and batteries:

  • Don't use batteries and chargers that are incompatible with your mobile device. Purchase manufacturer or carrier recommended products and accessories.
  • Do not let a loose battery come in contact with metal objects, such as jewelry, coins or keys. These objects can cross the electrical connections and cause an incident.
  • Do not crush, puncture or put a lots of pressure on the battery, as this can cause an internal short-circuit and cause overheating.
  • Do not place the phone or battery in areas that may get hot.
  • Avoid dropping your mobile device.
  • Do not let your mobile device or battery get wet. This will cause the battery contacts or circuitry to slowly corrode, which can pose a safety hazard.
  • Follow battery usage, storage and charging guidelines found in the user's guide.

In addition, both organizations urge consumers to properly dispose of their old batteries and equipment. Many programs across the country recycle these devices and will ensure they are properly disposed.
