Improving Safety with the Swipe of a Finger

"Technology is always evolving, and companies
can't be afraid to take advantage of change."
-- Eric Schmidt, Google
On Wednesday, August 7, ASSE’s Virtual Classroom hosted Improving Safety Through Mobile Technology. The webcast, sponsored by ASSE’s Young Professionals Common Interest group and presented by guest speaker Clint Wolfley, Safety and Health Manager for URS Tank Operations in Hanford, Wash., explains how the application of mobile technologies on the job site can cut costs, increase productivity and improve safety.

In 2012, URS, an engineering, design and construction firm, began using Apple iPads on two pilot sites. What they found was improved efficiently in the way data was collected on site and a significant drop in the cost of office supplies, travel time and down-time on the jobsite.

According to Wolfley, mobile technology not only enhances performance, but it improved the quality and productivity on the job.

Today, there are countless applications available for download on both Apple and Android platforms geared specifically toward SH&E professionals. Wolfley recommends any SH&E professional looking to start incorporating mobile technology in the workplace check out these apps:

iAuditor: Available for free from the App Store or Android Market, iAuditor creates a platform for safety professionals to perform assessments, generate check lists and incorporate images and/or video into every audit. Users have the ability to browse and share thousands of templates and build new inspection forms specific to their needs. After completion, all audits may be stored or forwarded back to the office via email.

iConstructSafe: Available for free from the App Store, iConstructSafe offers tips on using tools safely. The video clips, intended for construction workers on site, are based on OSHA standards and designed to remind workers how to use tools safely.

Online MSDS: Available from the App Store or Android Market, Online-MSDS allows users access to (M)SDS for thousands of chemicals and products . The app also enables users to contact a vender directly if information is unavailable.

OSHA Heat tool: Available for free from the App Store or Android Market, OSHA Heat Tool allows users to calculate the heat index for a worksite and risk level to outdoor workers. Users may then find guides to the protective measures that should be taken at that risk level to protect workers from heat-related illness.

Professional Development CIH/CSP Quiz: Available for free from the App Store or Android Market, these apps allow users to study for the Certified Industrial Hygienist and Certified Safety Professional exams on the go.

Technology affects all aspects of life, and as technologies continue to evolve, the possibilities are seemingly endless. While these technologies do have their benefits, there are always some limitations. Wolfley suggest working closely with an IT department before incorporating mobile technology in any workplace setting.
