NIOSH Guidelines Help Protect Emergency Responders

To help prevent fatalities and injuries for emergency responders, NIOSH has published a list of life-threatening diseases and guidelines on how to protect against them while on the job. The list includes the following four categories: diseases transmitted by contact or body fluids; diseases transmitted by airborne means; diseases transmitted through aerosol or droplet means; and diseases that could be used by bio-terrorists. Specific diseases include rabies, mumps, seasonal influenza and those included on the Department of Health and Human Services select agents list.
