NHSTA Urges Bicyclists & Drivers to Think Safe, Be Safe

In the midst of the summer months and warm weather, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reminds bicyclists and drivers to think safe, ride safe and be safe. The agency has provided safety tips for bicyclists and drivers, and urges everyone to remain alert on the road and be safe.

Tips for bicyclists:
  • Wear a properly-fitted helmet that meets Consumer Product Safety Commission standards.
  • Ride focused and alert; don't use electronic devices and never ride impaired by alcohol or drugs.
  • Be visible; wear bright colors and use reflective materials.
  • Obey traffic signs, signals and lane markings.
Tips for drivers:
  • Be predictable and signal your intentions to others.
  • Yield to bicyclists as though they were motorists.
  • Stop completely before making a right turn on red and in addition to looking left-right-left, look behind to check for bicyclists approaching from the rear.
