Heat can be an insidious hazard on outdoor worksites. Heat-related illnesses affect thousands of workers each year, and some of those workers die as a direct result of the heat or from other severe physical problems brought about by their exposure.
Jordan Hollingsworth’s article, “Heat: The Often-Unseen Danger on Construction Sites,” from the latest issue of the Construction Practice Specialty’s online technical publication Blueprints, outlines the steps safety professionals can take to engineer heat hazards out of the workplace. These include proper scheduling, providing ventilation or portable air conditioning and using shields to reflect radiant heat sources.
