NIOSH Publishes PTD Paper on Preventing Falls

As part of its prevention through design (PTD) initiative, NIOSH has released a "Workplace Design Solutions" publication that suggests building parapets on roof edges during the construction phase of buildings may help prevent worker falls. According to the agency, "Preventing Falls Through the Design of Roof Parapets,"provides readers with a case study to demonstrate how parapets could have protected a worker from a fatal fall, as well as design solutions to protect workers from falls, standards and the advantages of parapets.

NIOSH also recognizes that the decision to add parapets would need to be made during the concept/design phase, a phase where architects and designers might not necessarily take fall hazards into consideration. Thus, calling on PTD to help address hazards to workers during the design stage of a project.
