EPA Aims to Reduce Energy Use With Its Sustainability Plan

EPA has released its 2013 Strategic Sustainability Performance Plan, which details plans to cut energy use and waste in agency operations over the next year. The agency reports the plan is in line with U.S. President Barack Obama's Climate Action Plan to reduce carbon pollution and lead in clean energy. EPA's strategic plan includes:

  • continued work on the agency's water conservation program;
  • pursing reconstruction of key EPA research infrastructure;
  • consolidating the Research Toxicology Laboratory in Durham, NC, to the main laboratory at Reseach Triangle Park, NC, which will reduce agency rent costs, greenhouse gas emissions and result in a net reduction in agency space without affecting research capacity.
