Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has issued a proposal that would require commercial truck and bus companies to use electronic logging devices (ELDs) to better comply with regulations that determine how many hours a driver can work. FMCSA reports the electronic reporting would not only improve the quality of logbook data, but it would reduce the heavy paperwork load and driver fatigue. In addition, the agency reports the ELDs would "ultimately reduce hours-of-service violations by making it more difficult for drivers to misrepresent their time and avoid detection by FMCSA and law enforcement personnel."
