Video: Sprinkler Systems Work in a Fire

A video released by The Co-operators and Guelph Emergency Services shows that fire sprinkler systems greatly enhance safety. The video of a side-by-side burn of two identical rooms, one with sprinklers and the other without, shows just how quickly a modern content fire grows out of control. Thirteen seconds after the fire starts, smoke alarms sound. Sprinklers suppress the fire in 45 seconds, while the room without a sprinkler continues to spew toxic smoke and ultimately reaches flashover a minute and a half into the demonstration. According to the video, fires are most likely to occur between midnight and 6 a.m., with conditions becoming fatal in as little as two minutes. For more information on fire protection, visit the NFPA
