The Blue Vase Challenge

In his Worth Reading contribution this month, ASSE Fellow Mark Hansen, shares his review of The Go Getter by Peter Kyne. He calls it "a great book for motivating employees to take initiative and make decisions without constantly asking for management assent." Kyne's book shares the story of Bill Peck, a WW I vet who overcame many obstacles, surpassed expectations, solved the Blue Vase Challenge (you'll have to read to review to learn more) and became a leader. It also offers advice on meeting goals and tackling tough projects willingly. Says Hansen, "I've come to understand that the best way to manage good employees it to not manage them. . . . Really good leaders don't train employees, they grow future leaders."
